5 prompts to start your crime novel

October 18, 2024 by Matt Rees

How to start a crime novel, episode 19

If you’re stuck, here are five prompts to start your crime novel.

5 prompts to start your crime novel

  • stunning opening. Don’t try to figure out why it will happen yet. Just think of something that’ll make your jaw drop
  • cliffhanger. Come up with a bunch of them. Before you try to figure even who they’re happening to or why. You can build them into your plot structure later
  • think of a crazy twist
  • think of an action scene in a wild location
  • What if…? Once you have all these other elements, think of a way to tie them all together. “What if X happens, but everyone thinks Y has happened…?”

Once you have all this, use my other videos to structure your plot, diagram it, and get writing.
