Why you should plot

Why you should plot your crime novel

October 8, 2024 by Matt Rees

How to write a crime novel, episode 10

Lots of writers don’t plot their crime novels. That’s a bad idea, but they just write and figure it out as they go along. This post explains why you should plot your crime novel before you start writing.

Here’s what you should do, briefly:

  • How many thrillers and crime novels do you toss aside about two-thirds of the way through because the hero is belting back and forth without any apparent direction. That’s because the writer is doing the same thing…They didn’t plot it out in advance and now you’re seeing them get desperate right there on the page.
  • Use my structure tips and draw the diagram of your plot from my other video. That way you’ll always know where you’re going.
